No more medical images over WhatsApp
Over WhatsApp or any messaging app, a handful of compressed images travel with the patient’s details in plain sight, saved on every phone in the chat. In Colombia, Law 1581 (the country’s data protection law) treats health data as sensitive data.
A photo of the monitor is not a study
Photos over chat
- A few loose images, picked by whoever sends them
- Compressed, and often photographed off a screen
- A still image you cannot scroll through
- The patient’s name stays in the gallery and backups of every phone
SharingPortal
- The complete study, with every series
- The DICOM file, not a photo of it
- Scroll slice by slice in a web viewer
- Anonymized when uploaded without an account, and with an expiry date
Three steps, and the recipient just opens a link
- 01
Upload the study
Load the study’s DICOM files, for example the ones on the CD or USB drive the imaging center gave you.
- 02
Protect the patient’s identity
Upload without an account and the study is anonymized automatically. With an account, you choose whether to anonymize it.
- 03
Share the link
Send it by WhatsApp, email or however you like: what travels is the link, not the images. The recipient opens the study in the web viewer.

For whoever sends and whoever receives
Physicians
A patient arrives with a CD from another institution
Upload it and share it with the colleague who needs to see it, without depending on the CD’s viewer to work.
A second read from a subspecialist
Send the complete study, not three screenshots, and your colleague scrolls through it in the browser from wherever they are.
Tumor boards and teaching cases
Share the anonymized case with the team or your residents, without patient details circulating in a group chat.
Patients
A second opinion in another city
Send your complete study to the specialist through a link, without mailing the CD or traveling to drop it off.
Your specialist sees it before the appointment
Share the link ahead of time and arrive at the visit with the study already reviewed.
Your computer has no CD drive
Upload it once from a computer that has one, then open it on your phone or wherever you need it.
SharingPortal is standalone and open to anyone. It is not part of our RIS/PACS platform, nor of the patient and referring physician portals that institutions provide to their users.
You do not need to be a NOVA Imaging customer or run a RIS/PACS
Built for sharing, not for keeping
Studies have a limited lifetime: use without an account is temporary, and a free account keeps them for 60 days. SharingPortal does not replace an institution’s image archive or the retention medical records require. Always keep your original copy.
How long to retain diagnostic images in ColombiaLooking for that at your institution?
Long-term archiving, traceability and integrated results delivery are what our RIS/PACS does.

Why not just send the images over WhatsApp?
Because only a few compressed images arrive, without the rest of the series, and with the patient’s details saved on every phone in the chat. With SharingPortal you share the complete study through a link, and uploads without an account are anonymized automatically. The link itself you can send over WhatsApp.
How much does SharingPortal cost?
Use without an account and the free account cost nothing. Free accounts will stay free, always.
Do I have to be a NOVA Imaging patient or customer to use it?
No. SharingPortal is a standalone product: anyone with a study in DICOM format can use it, wherever the study was done.
What does it mean that the study is anonymized?
Before it is shared, the information that identifies the patient, such as their name and ID number, is removed from the study data. It always applies when you upload without an account; with an account you can choose.
How long does the study stay available?
Without an account, the lifetime is short, meant for sharing. With the free account, 60 days. SharingPortal is not an archive: always keep your original copy.
Does the person receiving the link have to install anything?
No. The images open in the browser, on a computer, a tablet or a phone.
Is it the same as my clinic’s patient portal?
No. The NOVA Imaging patient and referring physician portals are part of the RIS/PACS platform an institution subscribes to, and studies arrive there automatically with their report. SharingPortal is standalone: you upload the study and decide who to share it with.
